I jumped at the chance to get The Ultimate Boss Set by Lee Winter. Yes, I already have the individual novels and short stories, and I’ve read them all with great pleasure. In fact, I’ve read them multiple times as well as listening to the audio versions of the books. I just can’t get enough of these ice queens and the women who love them, so when I got the chance to have them all together I just couldn’t pass that up.
This set includes the novels, The Brutal Truth and The Awkward Truth as well as the three short stories that tie the two books together. Those stories are, “Five Times Felicity Met Elena”, “Aliens of New York”, and “The Brutal Lie”. I will add my reviews of the two novels below for those of you who have not read them yet. The short stories are also awesome reads, as they must be since they are written by Lee Winter.
When you get the set, make sure you read the Foreword. Ms. Winter has a couple of great suggestions for the order you should read the novels and stories. Whatever you do, get this set.
I acquired The Brutal Truth as an ARC, and I felt it was an excellent book, I really enjoyed it. The characters were very well developed. This author has the “ice queen” character down to an art. The plot had me hooked from the start, with a lot of twists and turns within the conflict. Part of the conflict was very timely, considering what’s happening all across the entertainment industry right now. This was the first book for me from this author, and I’ll definitely be looking for more by her. I highly recommend this book!
From the publisher’s website…
“In The Brutal Truth, take one media mogul, throw in a truth bet with her assistant, and as their secrets pour out, neither woman will be the same. A beautiful story about the lies we tell ourselves.”
The first book I ever read by Lee Winter was The Brutal Truth. I fell in love with her writing because of that novel. After that, I read every book and short story I could find of hers, and adored each & every tale. My favorites list is filled with her stories and now has a new addition with the latest novel by Ms. Winter, The Awkward Truth.
Also from the publisher’s website…
“The Awkward Truth sees Felicity hunting a missing donation to an animal charity. She tries hard not to notice a soft-butch vet or her adorable dog. This funny opposites-attract tale digs up the truth about what really matters in life.”
The Awkward Truth is a “sidequel” of sorts (a term coined by Shannon Luchies for the author) since the books are set in the same universe and the same time period. With The Awkward Truth, we get to read the story of Felicity Simmons. Felicity is driven to be the best at her job, and to make it to the top of her field. She went from being the Chief of Staff at Bartell Corp to deputy COO for the company. Now she is about to become acting COO…the very top and most powerful position she can achieve in the company. Then the owner, Elena Bartell sends her out to investigate a charity that helps homeless people’s pets. There she meets veterinarian Dr. Sandy Cooper. Cooper is the total opposite to Felicity. Cooper is a soft-butch Amazon-sized vet with a heart of gold and a love for all animals. Felicity is a prim-and-proper ice-queen businesswoman, laser focused on her career. They seem to have nothing in common…except that chemistry that seems to grow each time they meet.
This is the perfect opposites attract, ice-queen romance with lovable characters (both human and animal), discussions of serious real life issues, and a minor mystery that is well written into the story. The tale is heartwarming, heartbreaking, hilarious, sarcastic, and romantic. It has everything you expect from a Lee Winter novel, and more.
