Imagine being a contestant on a reality show called “When Sparks Fly” that tries to find true love for lesbians ala “The Bachelorette” and getting dumped on national tv. Then imagine the show coming to you ten years later and asking you to be The Flame choosing your true love from a group of ten contestants. Sounds great, huh? Well, Savannah Edwards wasn’t so sure, but decided to try it anyway. Everything starts out great until the spark she is expecting to find from one of the contestants comes instead from the host of the show, Lauren Lucas.
This is a great premise for the novel Forever by Kris Bryant. It provides so many opportunities for the author to add conflict to the story especially in the form of jealousy, angst, hidden trysts and more. I’ve never watched reality shows like this, but from my very limited experience, it seems like the setting of the book is realistic. I know it’s beautifully described. The characters are also well-developed. I connected with both main characters. I also connected with some of the secondary folks, especially Alix, one of the ten contestants. I would love to see Alix get their happy ever after one day, maybe in another book or short story (hint, hint)?
If you’re into reality shows and stories with lots of conflict and romance, then this is the novel for you.
I received an ARC from NetGalley and Bold Strokes Books for an honest review.
